Conflict Diamonds - Blood Diamonds
"It has been said that
war is the price of peace…
Angola and Sierra Leone have already paid too much. Let them live a better
life."
Ambassador Juan Larrain,
Chairman of the Monitoring Mechanism on sanctions against UNITA.
The film "Blood Diamond" starring
Leonardo DiCaprio has thrust into the spotlight the issue of conflict or blood
diamonds. We have tried below to explain some of the main terms used when
discussing this very serious issue, and also offer some information.
Kimberley Process
A process to ensure that legitimately sourced rough
diamonds are imported and exported in tamper evident boxes verified by a
government seal as conflict free.
System of Warranties
Calls upon retailers to require their diamond suppliers include a statement
on their invoices that their diamonds are in compliance with the Kimberley
Process and legitimately sourced.
Some Facts
The amount of conflict diamonds entering the market has decreased from 4% of
total diamond sales in 2001 to less than 1%. It is no coincidence that the
Kimberley Process was enacted in 2001.
Conflict-free diamonds do immense good for many African
nations enabling their governments the funding to provide schools and
infrastructure such as roads.
